Vicuñas live in the high regions of the Andes and are relatives to the Alpaca and Llama. They produce very small amounts of extremely fine wool, which can be shorn only once every three years. In 1974 they were declared endangered with a total population near 6,000 animals. Today, there are nearly 125,000 animals but they are still considered to be endangered.
